‘Dark Nuns’ Review: Exorcism Gets a Proper Film
Dark Nuns eschews simplicity and tired horror genre tropes in a meticulously crafted exorcism thriller that takes its subject matter seriously. A sequel of sorts to the 2015 South Korean film The Priests, director Kwon Hyeok-jae introduces a pair of diametrically different female protagonists destined to battle a terrifying demon while confronting skepticism, misogyny, and their own personal misgivings. They must learn to trust each other and their faith in a race against time with a boy’s precious life at stake.

Sister Junia (Song Hye-kyo) arrives at a dilapidated warehouse on a dark and foreboding night. She calmly smokes a cigarette as blood-curdling screams pierce the air. Several priests struggle to hold down a writhing and cursing child. Their incantations have no effect as the demon unleashes his evil power. Junia fearlessly enters the room and pours a bucket of holy water over the boy while screaming for the beast to release him. A cackle escapes blistered lips with words of warning. Junia will pay a dear price; this fight is just beginning. Hee-Joon (Moon Woo-jin) goes limp as the beast releases him.

The big problem with Dark Nuns is that Kwon builds to a riveting climax, and then milks the tension like a tired dairy cow for too long. The finale should have been more concise. It takes forever and deflates the film at its crowning moment. Dark Nuns has Korean dialogue with English subtitles. A production of Zip Cinema. Violating a sacred order of the Church
Obviously, these two Dark Nuns are not allowed to perform an exorcism. Not only is it a dangerous and forbidden exorcism ritual, they are putting their own immortal souls in danger. Of course, this doesn’t stop the nuns.
They do, however, need to find a few accomplices. For the nuns to perform the exorcism would be in direct violation of the Church’s sacred order.
